Vitreo-Retinal Associates of New Jersey was opened in January 1980 by two Harvard fellowship-trained physicians, Dr. Francis Cangemi and Dr. Ceaser Pitta. It was the first full time retina practice to open in Hudson County, New Jersey as well as the first full time practice to open at Clara Maass Medical Center. To this day, it remains the longest serving active retina center at these respective sites. In 1994, VRA opened its Bergen County office in Ridgewood, NJ.

VRA physicians were the first full time active retina service members of the Clara Maass Medical Center. Under their leadership, Clara Maass has become the leading vitreoretinal surgery center in the state of New Jersey, performing more surgical procedures than any other hospital in the state.

VRA remains the longest active and experienced practice in Hudson and Essex counties. It continues to provide state of the art cutting edge medical and surgical service to the patients in need of its skilled care. VRA continues to occupy a position of leadership in the retina community.

VRA is proud that all of its office sites are fully equipped state of the art medical facilities. The practice remains active in research and participation in clinical trials. In addition to Drs. Cangemi and Pitta, the practice includes two additional highly trained and skilled retina physicians; Dr. Alessandra Bertolucci and its newest member, Dr. Minhee Cho.
